Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then located multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
An important political figure stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
